Upright folio, 35.5 x 25.5 cm, half calf binding with marbled paper over board.  The front cover features a rectangular paper label with the manuscript inscription "Songs" similar to the label on Knight 01.  The volume is similar in some ways to binder's volumes in the collection, but here stubs in the binding enable the removal and addition of different items, which are glued into the stubs rather than being bound into the spine. The inside front cover includes the signature "Miss Jane Austen" (matching the inscription to CHWJA/19/4 in both hand and format); further down, the word "Miss" in the same ink and hand, apparently a first attempt at the signature, is rubbed out.  The inside front cover includes a manuscript index, written over the signature, in the same hand as the indices to CHWJA/19/4, CHWJA/19/5 and CHWJA/19/8. A pencil inscription above the index reads "Austen 1778" and a faint ink inscription in the top left corner reads "Austen 17788" (sic) in the same hand as the inscription on the inside front cover of Knight 01.  The inside front cover includes a 20th-century printed paper label "Jane Austen's House/ Chawton Hampshire."

The book contains manuscript items (solo vocal, vocal ensemble and keyboard) in a variety of hands, inserted randomly between prints of vocal and keyboard music.  Printed items were published from c.1780-c.1805, with most datable items appearing in print in the 1790s.  Not all items in the book are included in the index, suggesting that items continued to be inserted after the index was compiled.
